Valuations of art for estate and gift tax purposes (as well as for divorce and sale) present difficult issues when the art consists of many works by only one artist, chiefly because the art market can only absorb a limited number of works, yet the appraisal must decide value as of a certain date—in an estate, the owner’s date of death.
The Judd Foundation and the David Zwirner Gallery, which represents the artist’s estate, announced a two-part project intended to put Judd’s writings back into the art world’s critical discourse. The first part, by the Judd Foundation, will be a republication, in March, of “Donald Judd: Complete Writings 1959–1975,” (often known, because of its original cover, as “the Yellow Book,”) which collected some of his seminal essays and his early gallery reviews for magazines like “Arts,” “Arts Magazine,” and “Art International.”
A new catalogue listing all the paintings of Dublin-born artist Francis Bacon is to be published in April and will sell for £1,000 (approximately €1,300). The late artist’s estate has announced that Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonnéwill present “the entire oeuvre of the artist’s work for the first time”.
London’s National Portrait Gallery (NPG) has acquired sketchbooks, drawings, and letters by Lucian Freud from the artist’s estate. The artwork comes to the museum through the acceptance in lieu scheme.
